Efes (London)

Updated: Jan 4

Turkish cuisine is omnipresent in Whitechapel, and one of the mainstays has been Efes. Will this be a Turkish delight or a total bust? Was it any good? Time to find out...

Efes Interior

Ideal for:

  • Eating on a budget

  • Large gatherings

  • Kebab lovers

Ambience & Décor

The neon sign outside easily signposts to this cavernous and raucous restaurant. The lantern lighting, ornate wall hangings and gaudy trinkets all nail the Turkish stereotype. Plain wooden fixtures gives the impression quick turnaround and easy maintenance is the mantra.

Service

Waiting staff were quick and efficient in removing empties, bringing out new dishes/drinks and taking orders. Service was impressive and incredibly slick at Efes.

Food

The complementary homemade bread, chilli sauces and salad were delicious and I did not think we got so much for nothing. Just to sample, ordered some halloumi and hummus, both of which were really tasty! However, the focus is all on the main event, Efes Special 1 Platter.

Efes Special

The gargantuan platter could easily serve six let alone four. It contained; 1 x lamb skewer shish, 1 x chicken skewer shish, 1 x Adana kofte, 8 x chicken wings, 3 x lamb ribs, 2 x lamb chops, lamb & chicken doner, rice and finally cous cous. The best of Efes in one platter, and I savoured each individual item, with the lamb chops, Adana kofte and chicken doner being the standouts. Combined with the rice and cous cous, this platter was divine.

Efes is ideal for group gatherings and one can order takeaway too. Day or night, eating in or taking out, Efes has yet to disappoint, and I have eaten here numerous times. The A+ is symptomatic of the unfaltering consistency.

Final grade: A+

Final comment: Delivering the best of Turkey's delights for a fantastically reasonable price
