Kame (NYC)

Updated: Dec 25, 2023

Ramen is now ubiquitous in downtown Manhattan, and I stumbled across Kame on one of my many adventure walks. The smell emanating was amazing, but was it any good? Time to find out…

Ramen

Ideal for:

  • Those living in Chelsea and NOMAD who want to try something different.

  • A quick bite to eat at lunch or at dinner just before further plans.

  • When you are starving, and you want a wholesome meal.

Ambience & Décor

It was always a good sign when the restaurant was packed full of Asian people, and Kame was no different. Due to the small space, the diners’ good times reverberated and created a vibrant atmosphere. The décor inside was all dark and plain for easy maintenance but still looked sleek and welcoming.

Service

Service in Ramen places must be rapid, and add into the mix its NYC, it was an imperative it was slick, and thankfully it was, so no complaints from me.

Food

Shoyu Ramen

The fried Chicken Karaage was plentiful, beautiful, and tasty. The batter was light, well-seasoned and not oily, with a moist chicken centre. The spicy aioli was tasty, not hot and was a fantastic complement. The Shoyu Ramen (see left) was a culinary triumph. The clear, well-seasoned, soy-based broth was tasty given that the flavour from the other ingredients seeped in. The braised pork belly was phenomenal. The teriyaki, mirin, soy, and chilli marinade elevated the meat and the dish. The pork melted in your mouth, and was complemented brilliantly by the shiitake mushrooms, bamboo, spring onion and sesame oil. I was so full by the end of this, and I was fully sated. Kame was faultless in its dishes, and I will have to try more dishes for it to get top accolades, but it was a strong A rating.

Final grade: A

Final comment: Kame was a fantastic Ramen place that I would happily return to.
