Absurd Bird Soho (London)

Updated: Dec 25, 2023

Absurd Bird Soho had been on the bucket list but the introduction of Thunderbirds into the London fried chicken scene had taken some limelight. Saw Absurd Bird Soho and thought why not. Was it any good? Time to find out...

Fried Chicken Bucket with Fries

Ideal for:

  • A quick pre-theatre or pre-clubbing meal

  • Dinner with a lively vibe

  • Dining on a budget

Ambience & Décor

Booking is a must and you can see why. Absurd Bird Soho went for the cheap working-class bar décor and vibe with a giant neon chicken on the façade, neon lettering inside, dim lighting, cheap furniture and bare walls. The petite venue was heaving with staff and diners, all creating this cacophonous noise. Ideal for shooting the breeze, but not ideal for a date. Cramped dining is a bugbear, and the tables were too close together, but unsurprising given the size.

Service

Service was quick. High booking volumes meant quick table turnover. The service staff were so proficient whilst always serving with a smile. They kept checking in despite running around like headless chickens (pun intended!).

Food

Fried Mac & Cheese Balls

Started with the classic Fried Mac & Cheese Balls (left). For £5, 3 was about right. So creamy, cheesy and the macaroni was soft. It was delicious and a cracking start.

Given there were two of us, decided to go for the Boneless Bird Bucket (bottom). 10 chicken tenders, 6 pieces of waffles, 2 portion of fries, and 4 dips. The dips picked were Sriracha Mayo, Blue Cheese, Non-Honey Mustard and Buffalo.

Fried Chicken Bucket with Fries

The waffles, fries and dips were faultless and a great accompaniment to the fried chicken – the crispy, fluffy fries were the highlight. The fried chicken was perfectly crisp on the outside, and slightly overdone on the inside. The meat was not as soft and as tender as I would have liked. Whilst, the bucket was a good meal, there was space for improvement. The meal was washed down with an Absurd Colada which was refreshing and tasty take on the classic.

Overall, Absurd Bird delivered a good night out one that I can see becoming a regular. For the price, this place gave great value. But if you want a nice place with a vibe, great alcohol and fantastic chicken, the Thunderbirds at Giant Robot Canary Wharf trumped Absurd Bird Soho in all 3 departments. Overall, a B– rating.

Final grade: B-

Final comment: Great night and a lot of fun but preferred Thunderbirds!
