Bayside was akin to one of those cute little hidden brunch spots in London that could be a hidden gem, and it was not surprising that the British owners have gone for the same vibe. Was it any good? Time to find out…
Ideal for:
Young families as they have outdoor seating and a unisex changing room.
Cute little light brunches with a coffee or drinks and a relaxed vibe.
The traditional brunch staples like pancakes and avocado on toast.
Ambience & Décor
Bayside was tucked away in West Bay, away from the main tourist hotspots, but despite becoming more well known, it was never heaving inside, and the ambience was quite pleasant, unless you had screaming children.
The restaurant was bathed in natural light from its glass panelled walls that illuminated the dark furnishings inside. Bayside went for that cool light-dark contrast – dark walls and chairs and light tables and light fixtures. It does look very trendy.
Service
The service has always been a personable at Bayside but not necessarily quick. They have taken their time to even when not overly busy.
Food
The Breakfast Burger (see left) was for those who want to go big early. 6oz medium rare, well-seasoned and perfectly cooked patty complemented with the same bacon bits as above, slightly soggy hash browns due to the juices from the burger, generous burger sauce, condiments, and finally Swiss cheese. All this encased in a buttery brioche bun. Soggy hash brown aside, this was a tasty burger, and a great way to start the day, albeit not the healthiest.
I wanted to review a medley of dishes in one go. Starting with the Bay-LT, two things about this that made it unique. Firstly, the bacon was cured and smoked in some form of sweet honey-based syrup with fragrant Italian-esque seasoning that gave it an amazing sweet-savoury taste. Secondly, it was shredded into smaller pieces so you are not biting into it and battling a tough single piece of bacon – a battle you may lose! The sweet tomato chutney in here also had a spicy undertone to it without being overbearing, so was a BLT that covered all flavour tones. Who doesn’t love brioche buns!
The healthiest option I tried were the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes (see right). Fluffy, moist, pancakes full of natural Lemon flavour (zest and essence), beautifully presented with roses, candied nuts for the crunch, rose essence, and a garnish of crushed pistachios. To the side were aesthetic dollops of ricotta, with the entire dish covered in a thin but ample helping of golden syrup. The best dish for me, given I am a citrus lover who adored it when fresh ingredients come to the fore in a light dish.
Overall, Bayside was a hidden gem that is less hidden these days because the food does speak for itself. I have never had a bad experience, but the service and the above average price point meant it’s a solid A rating.
