Berners Tavern (London)

Updated: Feb 12

Jason Atherton is one of my favourite Michelin-starred chefs, and have been eager to dine at his iconic Berners Tavern. Upmarket modern British food served in a gorgeous setting, but was it any good? Time to find out...

Ambience & Décor

Berner's Tavern interior

The décor of Berners Tavern was the restaurant’s greatest asset with the ornate, cavernous and classy dining room. The plethora of golden-framed oil paintings and the ostentatious yet beautiful crown moulding piece feels like you are in a Royal home. The gorgeous, custom-made oval chandeliers add to the grandeur. Classic meets contemporary at the bar, where the neon green lighting gives a cool chic look. The European Grand Café style interior was brought superbly to the streets of London at great expense no doubt. The ambience was mellow for a weekend brunch.

Service

The well-polished and neatly-groomed waiters were unbelievably attentive and so charming, despite having such a large dining area to cover. They earned their tip. Given the grandiose setting, the service and food need to follow suit.

Food

Baked eggs, tomato and harissa, yoghurt, spiced nuts and seeds, toasted sourdough

The brunch menu looks divine covering off all palates. The baked eggs, tomato and harissa, yoghurt, spiced nuts and seeds, toasted Borough Market sourdough (left) had well cooked eggs, a lovely viscous yolk and the chilli heat from the tomato and harissa to liven the dish up. To add some meat, I ordered a side of bacon. The sourdough was a perfect to mop up the yolk, stray tomatoes and the crispy bacon. Flavours and textures complemented well, with the tomato and harissa mix the highlight.

Berners Tavern is a beautiful restaurant with slick service and tasty food. I think for the price charged, the food does not present the best value but the wow-factor of everything else compensates. I would need to try their à la carte menu before giving the highest accolade. Solid A rating and will return.

Final grade: A

Final comment: Elegant, Opulent and Delicious. British fine dining as it should be.
