Blue Cilantro (Cayman)

Updated: Dec 25, 2023

Blue Cilantro is tucked nondescriptly away next to a roundabout, but I heard good things about the food since coming to the Cayman Islands. Was it any good? Time to find out…

Burrata Tart

Ideal for:

  • Dinner with friends where everyone likes to try something different

  • When you are looking for something a bit fancier than normal

  • Impressing your date

Ambience & Décor

Blue Cilantro is as understated inside as it is outside, except for the neon blue lighting, which gives a weird ambience inside, especially given it so dark otherwise. Given this is a more upmarket establishment, it was also quite reserved and sombre inside, although as more wine was consumed, the levels did rise.

Service

We did have a lovely waitress for the night who was very attentive, noted down our preferences, made recommendations based off that, and ensured the wine glasses were always topped up. I did enjoy the service here – very pleasant.

Food

Burrata Tart

Blue Cilantro prides itself on presentation and the Burrata Tart (see left) starter was aesthetically pleasing but also had the taste to support the visuals. Burrata has been done to death, but this dish stood out because the truffle balsamic glaze complemented the burrata and compressed tomatoes well. The lovely twist was the basil ice-cream, that was smooth and packed flavour. Could never complain this dish lacked flavour!

Lobster Risotto with bisque sauce, root and seasonable vegetables

The Lobster Risotto with bisque sauce, root and seasonable vegetables (see right) was a little bit more hit and miss. Whilst the lobster was perfectly cooked, and the bisque was creamy and rich, the risotto should have been more al-dente rather than mush, and I will be frank, boiled peas, carrots do not work in a risotto.

The Lobster Ravioli with truffle oil, pumpkin & chorizo sauce was the main to pick. Ravioli was perfectly cooked, and flavourful with the truffle oil and chorizo – overall was light and delicious.

The diverse menu deserves mention as I feel this is great for groups but also a reason to come back. The chocolate dessert, chocolate fudge with chocolate rocks, Kahlua ice cream and chocolate brownie crumbs was nice but given I am not a chocolate afficionado, was not for me.

Overall, I had a pleasant experience at Blue Cilantro, with the starter and ravioli being the highlights. For the astronomical price of the meal, was the food worth it – debatable! – so therefore it gets an A- rating

Final grade: A-

Final comment: Lovely dishes and expansive menu, but not value for money.
