Cake & Bubbles (London)

Updated: Feb 11

I had been on the lookout for an afternoon tea spot that was classy but did not feel to pretentious or ostentatious. Cake & bubbles seemed to fit the description, so I decided to grab an old friend and try it. Was it any good? Time to find out…

Cheese Cake

Ideal for:

  • Impressing your friends with a quirky but classy venue for tea

  • A relaxed sit down after hitting the shops at Oxford Street

  • Dessert lovers

Ambience & Décor

The decorative cream-coloured walls with the pastel-toned marble disperses the natural light from the large front windows to make it feel so bright and light inside. The discreet chrome light fittings add to the affluent vibe. The contrasting table and chairs just work so well with the rest of the room. Classy, understated décor that is a perfect setting for afternoon tea. The sombre ambience befitting the mantra of the sedate, posh afternoon tea.

Service

The waitress made great suggestions given it was my first time here. Subtle engagement without being over-bearing. She got a good tip from me.

Food

Frozen coconut and chocolate flower

The reThe restauranteur, Albert Adrià, was once named the “Best Pastry Chef in the World”, so I had high hopes. The Frozen coconut and chocolate flower (left) was beautifully crafted yet dainty.

Golden egg flan

The bitter tempered chocolate was complemented well with the strong lemony citrus of yuzu and freshness of coconut

The almond and raspberry éclair was delicious. The overwhelming flavour was the freeze-dried raspberry nestled in the raspberry mousse. The nut-covered exterior gave another depth of texture. Beautifully crafted.

Cheese Cake

The highlights were the cutesy Golden egg flan (left) and the signature Cheese Cake (below). The flan was a lovely texture. The passionfruit top layer added the zesty, refreshing kick with the caramel at the base giving the sweetness. The presentation in a golden egg shell with a golden egg cup all added to the pomp.

If there is one dish to try it is the Cheese Cake. Designed to look like a wheel of cheese, the hard white chocolate exterior was not sickly sweet. The whippy, creamy and delicious brie interior was sublime with subtle hints of hazelnut.

All the desserts tried were amazing. Small portions for the price is indicative of the clientele Cake & Bubbles attract and the touristy area. Overall Cake and Bubbles was a great experience and worthy of the high accolades it received. Prices aside, this restaurant fit my brief, and will come back. Solid A rating.
