Having been to all other Dishooms in London, it was time to review the chain’s latest iteration in Canary Wharf. Dishoom is one of the rare Indian restaurants I will go to, so was this branch any good? Time to find out…

Ideal for:

  • When you want a quick bite to eat before hitting the bars at the Wharf.

  • A lovely, authentic sit-down Indian meal for a very reasonable price.

  • Dinner out with mates or a date.

Ambience & Décor

Dishoom’s decently sized, outside, covered, seating area, where we were seated, was this venue's USP and done up nicely. For warm sunny days, the view out onto the Wharf was nice, but conversely, wrap up in the Autumn/Winter months. The restaurant’s minimalist décor was in-keeping with the nouveau-chic-minimalist decors of all Canary Wharf offices and flats whilst the colour scheme coming from the oak and cream marbled flooring reminded me of India. The brilliant décor and buzz from opening week made a fantastic setting for lunch.

Service

Soft openings are designed to work out the kinks, but the service was impeccable. I really appreciated the attentive nature of our waiter.

Food

Vada Pau

As is standard, I ordered a plethora of dishes. The Gunpowder potatoes (smoke grilled, broken apart, tossed with butter, crushed aromatic seeds and green herbs) (see above) were good, but they missed the usual zing from lemons to elevate. The Vada Pau (potato doughnut and chutney in a bun) and Keema Pau (spiced minced lamb and peas in a runny mixture, pickled onion in a bun) (see left), two staple dishes from Mumbai, were beautifully authentic, spicy without being overpowering, and packed a plethora of vibrant flavour. The modern brioche twist added the sweetness to cut the spice.

Chicken Ruby

The Chicken Ruby was one of my most favoured dishes period because the creamy, buttery, tasty Makhani sauce is to die for, and the chicken was so succulent, all mopped up with the Garlic Naan, that was so garlicy, it could have killed vampires – delicious combo! The Sheekh Kebab (minced lamb, green chilli, coriander, cumin) (see above) was too mushy and oily, but tasted gorgeous. Overall, the venue, service and food were as expected, upholding the excellent standards of Dishoom, but there were some faults with the dishes, hence an A rating.

Final grade: A

Final comment: Upheld the Dishoom brand name very well and would return.
