Dishoom Carnaby (London)

Updated: Feb 6

Dishoom opened its doors to a whirlwind of critical acclaim. Has the Dishoom blueprint been successfully replicated at Carnaby Street? Was it any good? Time to find out...

Gunpowder potatoes

Ideal for:

Ambience & Décor

Dishoom exterior

The lively vibrant bar combined with the more sombre restaurant caters for patron's needs. Whether it is a quick tipple or a sit-down meal, the vibe matches the occasion. I always appreciate the Dishoom vibe.

The interior is a medley of wooden fixtures and fittings, quirky overhead lighting and ceiling fans. Dishoom Carnaby has funky neon wall lightings and an assortment of knick-knacks on a shelving unit that seems bizarre but it works.

Service

The waiting staff were jovial, attentive and accommodating. Service at all Dishoom branches have been top notch, and Dishoom Carnaby was no different.

Food

The Bombay Colada is a welcome tonic for hot days. Classic pineapple, rum and coconut cream given a Bombay twist; coriander, sweet chai syrup, lime juice. Refreshing, tasty and decadently more-ish. The predominantly vegetarian material started with an Indian classic.

Vegetable Samosas

The Vegetable Samosas are a fine filo pastry, pea and potato filling warmly spiced with cinnamon and cloves. These were fantastic; not oily, greasy or starchy. The thin crispy casing encasing an ineffable combo of fluffy potatoes and peas. The seductive aroma from the cinnamon and cloves tantalised taste buds further. Four samosas for the price was good value.

Gunpowder potatoes

Gunpowder potatoes (right) are skin-on potatoes that have been grilled, cracked apart and flavoured with butter, chillies, crushed aromatic seeds and herbs. So, simple yet so tasty. The chilli heat, herb flavouring and smoky undertones from the cooking technique unleash bags of flavour. Perfect levels of spice for my palate and rightly this is a crowd pleaser.

The thick consistency and rich flavour of the House Black Daal signals the copious amounts of cream and butter used, but when it tastes that good, I certainly do not care. The lack of spice means it is for everyone and the Garlic Naan side mopped it up. For the price, I did want more naan.

Spicy Lamb Chops

The Spicy Lamb Chops (left) are a Dishoom speciality that is a must try. The lamb is marinated overnight with lime juice, jaggery, other spices, ginger and garlic. The meat was grilled to perfection – tender, succulent and juicy. The spices infuse into the meat causing an explosion of flavours.

Dishoom Carnaby replicated the chain's mantra to perfection. Good quality food, service and vibes at a reasonable price. For authentic food without going to India, come here. Dishoom Carnaby gets an easy A+ rating. To see Essen’s review of Dishoom King's Cross, please click here
