Dishoom Kings Cross (London)

Updated: Feb 6

Dishoom opened its doors to a whirlwind of critical acclaim. Has the Dishoom blueprint been successfully replicated at King's Cross? Was it any good? Time to find out...

Ambience & Décor

Dishoom KGX Interior

The glass façade displays all whilst bathing the venue in ample natural light. Dishoom's décor is the best in the chain, with the cavernous unit paying homage to its past. Keeping period features such as the giant retro clock and the plethora of metal tubing, pipes and structures was a nice touch. The cherry-coloured fixtures and ceiling fans adding the Indian twist. Whilst the bar areas are brilliant, the pièce de résistance is the mezzanine level. Seated here, the ambience was very casual and relaxed. Perfect for a weekend brunch.

Service

The mezzanine level had their own serving staff who were very attentive and friendly. Climbing up and down those stairs all day is a fantastic cardiovascular workout, but despite this, they looked unruffled amongst the thriving chaos of a fully booked restaurant.

Food

The Bombay Colada is a welcome tonic for hot days. Classic pineapple, rum and coconut cream given a Bombay twist; coriander, sweet chai syrup, lime juice. Refreshing, tasty and decadently more-ish. The meal started with the simple yet tasty Chilli Cheese Toast. A crowd pleaser, but something that can be made at home.

Spicy Lamb Chops

The Spicy Lamb Chops (left) are a Dishoom favourite, and a must-try. It is my yardstick for the cooking quality. The lamb was marinated overnight with lime juice, jaggery, other spices, ginger and garlic. The meat was grilled to perfection – tender, succulent and juicy. The spices infused into the meat whilst cooking and exploded on my palate with each morsel. The best dish.

Gunpowder potatoes

Gunpowder potatoes (right) are skin-on potatoes that have been grilled, cracked slightly and flavoured with butter, chillies, crushed aromatic seeds and herbs. So, simple yet so tasty. The chilli heat, herb flavouring and smoky undertones from the cooking technique unleash bags of flavour and the right amount of spice. Rightly, this is a crowd pleaser.

The Nalli Nihari is and Indian classic exclusive to this Dishoom. Whilst the fatty texture can be off-putting, the 'melt in your mouth' lamb stew tastes amazing due to being generously spiced. The hearty portion presents good value and the side naan mops up the gravy nicely.

House Black Daal

Cooked for 24 hours, the House Black Daal (bottom right) is dark, rich, and full of flavour. Wonderfully buttery and creamy, this is another personal favourite. The lack of spice means it is for everyone. My only gripe with the meal was the small garlic naans (left), but the amazing taste helped alleviate some displeasure.

Dishoom King's Cross is my new favourite Dishoom. The interior is a beautiful fusion of the past and present, whilst the authentic tasty food represents great value. I am not going to let a small portion of garlic naan stop Dishoom King's Cross getting an easy A+ rating.
