Door No.4 (Cayman)

Updated: Feb 6

Door No.4 is set in the upmarket complex called The Grove, and the classy, cute, hole in the wall type bar with an outside seating aesthetically hits the mark, but what about the food and drink. Was it any good? Time to find out…

Duck Tacos, Grilled Cheese and Pasta

Ideal for:

  • A cute and quiet date night under the mood lighting indoors and out.

  • Cocktail lovers – there are varied selections on their menu.

  • When you want a light lunch or dinner.

Ambience & Décor

Door No.4 did have a minimalist décor which, coupled with the quirky light fixtures, mood lighting and exposed brick wall, did feel classy, niche and a good case of less is more. The narrowness of the bar tucked inside a housing complex did make it feel cosy, so the outside space was a welcome addition for those that do not like feeling cramped. The vibe inside was livelier given the smaller space, but sat outside, it was more of a quieter, romantic vibe.

Service

The service outside was not forgotten about and was good without note.

Food

Duck Tacos, Grilled Cheese and Pasta

Started with Mini Grilled Cheese filled with fontina, provolone, asiago, and bacon jam. The nuttiness from the fontina, smokiness from provolone and creaminess from the mild asiago coupled with the sweetness of the jam was the highlight.

The Confit Duck Tacos (see left) was a hit and miss dish. The confit duck was overcooked and tough, which was a criminal shame, but the dish was rescued by the accompaniments of queso fresco, pickled red onion and lime aioli that gave bursts of flavour.

The Mushroom Tagliatelle was very bland, and pasta was too al dente for me. I wanted the earthy tones of the mushroom to be celebrated but flopped. Thankfully the passionfruit martinis helped numb the disappointment.

Overall, I think Door No. 4 needs to up the food game – simply not there with the dishes I had. Their menu is extensive, so could be tempted to come back, but the grilled cheese and martinis raised the score to a C- Rating.

Final grade: C-

Final comment: Cool, cute, likeable bar that is better on the drinks than the food.
