Goodman Canary Wharf (London)

Updated: Feb 11

For me, the crown for the best steak restaurant has always been between Hawksmoor and Goodman. In the last head to head, Hawksmoor won it, but can Goodman pull one back? Was it any good? Time to find out…

Ideal for:

  • Casual dinner with mates

  • Steak aficionados

  • Date night

Ambience & Décor

Overlooking the quay gave the Canary Wharf branch a waterside view of the towering buildings in the area. Despite the cutting-edge surroundings, the branch has a distinctively retro look. The fittings were a tribute to velvety leather and Chesterfield-style buttoned sofas, all matching the mahogany finish of the fixtures and floors. The low hanging light added a bit of quirkiness to proceedings.

Service

Our waiter deserved special mention. Appreciate the restaurant was not at full capacity, but Roberto delivered exemplary service from start to finish. It was thanks to him we selected our meat.

Food

Porterhouse Steak

Decided to skip starters and order the steak with a plethora of sides. The main event was the Porterhouse (900g) (left). The Pure Black Angus from Yorkshire must be one heck of a breed, because the inherent taste of the meat was sublime. The steak was perfectly cooked and well-seasoned. For the first time in a while, the steak and its juices were enough; the Béarnaise felt superfluous. This was arguably the best steak preparation I have had from memory.

If truffles are your thing, then order the Truffle Chips and Mac and Cheese with Truffle Salsa (right). You will not be disappointed. As alternatives the Hand Cut Chips were equally stunning and whilst the Creamed Spinach (right) was nice, it was too gloopy and unrefined for me. The combination of the steak, sauces and truffle makes my mouth salivate as I write.

The question asked at the top of the review was if Goodman can pull one back against Hawksmoor for the crown of the best steak restaurant in London. I can categorically say that Goodman knocked it out of the park. The highlight was the steak. It was truly sublime. The sides for a truffle aficionado like myself were a perfect foil. For now this usurps Hawksmoor as the best steak place in London. An easy A+ rating.

Final grade: A+

Final comment: The best all round steak experience I have had in London!
