Half Cup (King's Cross) (London)

Updated: Feb 11

Weekend brunch is an institution in the millennial-driven, modern society. Desecrating it is considered a gastronomic crime. Half Cup’s coffee has rave reviews, but was it any good? Time to find out…

Half Cup Indoors

Ideal for:

  • Health-conscious diners looking for a hearty meal

  • A cheap and cheerful brunch that also tastes good

  • A quirky brunch setting with mates or a date

Ambience & Décor

The décor inside was quirky. The striking design feature was their ornately painted, bright and vibrant flowers and birds dotted all around the all-white walls. White walls on a sunny day with those bright colours made the place come alive. Atop the service pass in the kitchen, there was a beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers that greet you upon entry. There décor feels trendy, modern and millennial-approved. The ambience complemented the décor to give a fantastic, feel-good vibe for brunch. My only gripe was that because it was a cosy restaurant, it felt cramped.

Service

No booking policies wind me up. I know it is to eliminate no-shows and keep costs down, but when I come for a meal at a set time, I just want to be seated immediately. Life is too short to be spent queueing. Thankfully, the queues were short, and the service inside made up for the wait. Despite being a small operation, the staff are friendly, accommodated my quirks of being a blogger and always served with a smile. They helped me decide the perfect dish for me.

Food

Oreo French Toast

I tried to resist a sweet brunch but after having seen the Oreo French Toast, I wanted it. Served with Nutella Cream, fresh berries, strawberry coulis (see left), this was Half Cup’s most popular sweet dish, and you can taste why. The Toast itself was perfect, delicious and velvety soft. It was covered with an Oreo dust and strawberries. With each bite, a dollop of the smooth, fluffy Nutella cream, complemented the rustic toast, Nutella crumb and silky strawberries. It worked so well together. Surprisingly, this dish was not as sweet as you would expect, so those with a sweet tooth may expecting more. For £10.50, this was amazing value, as it tasted amazing, and it filled me up. The one negative was that my friend was not as enamoured with their Hash Benedict. Felt it was too small and the halloumi was a tad over-cooked.

Half Cup (Kings Cross) delivered a good brunch for an amazing price. The gripes about the cramped space and inconsistent food means it gets a solid A- rating.
