Le Vele (Cayman)

Updated: Feb 11

Le Vele is one of the few waterfront dining places in Cayman, but it does serve an array of pastas, pizzas, and fresh local ingredients – and that is something a lot of places do. Was it any good? Time to find out...

Confit Duck Pizza

Ideal for:

  • Locals who keep driving past this nondescript place to try something new.

  • Having a light dinner before heading out to the nearby bars for drinks.

  • Watching the sunset over a nice, intimate, candlelit date night.

Ambience & Décor

Le Vele is one of the few places in Cayman where you can have a nice sit-down dinner with a beautiful sunset as your backdrop. Ambience on the open deck was quieter than the more closed-in restaurant, so depending on the type of night you are planning, go inside or outdoors. Décor is as nondescript as its façade, hence why people forget about this spot.

Service

Service was good and prompt here despite being a relatively busy night. Waitress was friendly, and always served with a smile.

Food

Penne Mare e Monti

The Penne Mare e Monti (see left) was incredible. Penne with lobster, beef tenderloin tips, leeks all tossed in a brandy cream sauce. The portion was ample, without skimping on the lobster or the beef tenderloins. Lobster was perfectly poached and not tough. The beef was cooked medium-rare, which is my preference. I always loved the Diane sauce you got with steak, so this brandy sauce was just heavenly.

The most innovative and best dish in my opinion was Duck Confit (see above) pizza. Whoever thought to have confit on a pizza was a genius. Served with caramelized onions, Brussel sprouts (that I asked to be removed), truffle oil and Fontina cheese. Fontina has an earthy, mushroom taste, so paired with the truffle and duck beautifully. They didn’t skimp on the confit, and the best pizza in Cayman for me.

Picking between those dishes is like picking your favourite child – secretly you have a preference, but you love them both just as much. Le Vele for me was a hidden gem. I will return to try other things on their extensive, affordable menu. Given I have not tasted the wider menu, can only give it a solid A rating.

Final grade: A

Final comment: A hidden gem with a fantastic sea view – one to come back to!
