Maxwell's (Freakshake Only) (London)

Updated: Feb 12

The freakshake craze has travelled across the globe and now landed in England. Maxwell's has been one of the pioneers of the craze in the London but was it any good? Time to find out...

Ideal for:

  • Those with a sweet tooth

  • Food challenge lovers

  • Massive appetites

This Australian import had taken London by storm, and it was time to see if it was all hype or not. My housemate and I went one Saturday afternoon to take on this 2,000-calorie colossus.

Ambience & Décor

Seated at the light and airy bar area for this challenge, the décor felt like a diner. The comfy stools the throne we sat on to take on the challenge. As expected at a tourist hotspot on a Saturday, Maxwell's was buzzing and great vibes.

Service

The waiting staff were abysmal as they told us off for being 5 minutes late and told us to vacate the table we originally had as they implied higher paying customers deserved the table more! The bar staff were the antithesis; friendly, attentive and full of banter.

Food

We ordered the Salted Caramel Donut Freakshake (left) and the Oreo Cookie Freakshake (below). The former was a salted caramel thick shake topped with whipped cream, salted caramel sauce, whole salted caramel doughnut and marshmallows. The latter was vanilla ice cream and Oreo thick shake topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, 2 Oreo biscuits finished with a homemade Oreo cookie sandwich… heavenly!

The first bite is one I will not forget in a hurry. The smoothness of the ice cream with the coarseness of the Oreo cookie sandwich enveloped in a chocolate blanket to form one rich, decadent and tasty bite. I hit the ‘food wall’ challenge eaters speak off, as I approached the ice cream base. Nonetheless, after 30 minutes of munching, slurping and cooing, I bested the shake. At £7.95, Freakshakes are worth it, as I didn’t eat for the rest of the day. Out of the two, I recommend the Oreo one but the salted caramel doughnut was divine.

It was worth taking time out of our lives to do this. Maxwell's freakshakes are really tasty. The only reason it did not get an A+ is due to the abysmal service at the beginning. If Maxwell's food is this good, then I shall come back to sample it. Easy A rating.

Final grade: A

Final comment: A challenge that is a must for diners and bloggers. Simply Superb.
