Mildreds Soho was a great introduction to the Mildreds family. Can the newest member of the family at King's Cross uphold those high standards? Was it any good? Time to find out...
Ideal for:
Vegetarians bored of the usual restaurant meal choice
Newly converted vegetarians looking for some wow
Those who cannot get into Mildreds Soho
Ambience & Décor
The fully glass-walled premise gave an insight into how packed Mildreds got these days. The interior was more modern and spacious compared Mildreds Soho, but the clean-cut contemporary feel meant the charm of the Soho branch was not present. The fixtures and fittings screamed easy maintenance, but it worked in the stripped back clean-cut look inside.
No booking meant settling for a communal table and cramped dining. Contorting myself between rotund diners and having issues conversing was not my idea of fun.
Service
Staff were relatively attentive, given the restaurant was full. Mildreds prided itself on quick turnaround, and the efficient service enabled this.
Food
The Kumquat Mojito took the edge off. The drink was really refreshing and an instant hit. The citrus and sweetness from the kumquat was a fantastic twist to the usual ingredients.
Due to the lack of hunger, we only ordered 2 small plates and 1 large plate. To start, the Pan-fried manouri cheese with Sicilian tomato and lemon, Kalamata olives (left) was quintessentially Mediterranean. The naturally sweet undertones complemented the bitterness of the olives and the rustic taste & texture of the manouri cheese. In typical Med fashion, the salad was light too.
The second was Chickpeas and roasted red pepper sautéed with smoked paprika (right). Smoked paprika smelled divine and added such kick. The explosion of flavour was a treat for the palate. The manouri cheese starter had the finesse of a diamond cutter, but the chickpeas was a jackhammer. I loved it, and the generous portion presented good value.
Final dish was Southern deep-fried vegan buttermilk and polenta mock chicken with red cabbage, maple coleslaw, sweet potato fries and smoked chipotle dip (left). Lot going on, but individually tasty and collectively divine; the best being the crispy coating. The coleslaw and sweet potatoes gave the authentic Deep South vibe. The chipotle dip provided the heat this dish needed. Fantastic flavours and textures.
Mildreds has been the diamond standard when it comes to Vegetarian and Vegan dining, and I think its Kings Cross branch does the brand justice. I think the food is excellent, the décor is palatable, but the cosy and cramped dining this time round was particularly difficult to ignore. For intimate dates, the communal tables, just do not work, but for group meals, Mildreds hits the spot. Overall Mildreds Kings Cross gets an A rating.

Final grade: A
Final comment: Still the Diamond standard for Vegetarians and Vegans. Must try!
