Mykonos Bakery (Cayman)

Updated: Feb 6

Mykonos Cayman opened to much fanfare on the island, and whilst I have yet to try their restaurant, I thought I would dip my toe into the more affordable bakery. Was it any good? Time to find out…

Maritozzi

Ideal for:

  • When you have those sweet dessert cravings that ice cream will not fix.

  • When you want a lighter lunch like a sandwich with a coffee.

  • When you want freshly baked artisanal bread for home.

Ambience & Décor

The bakery was a cute, little shop tucked away in the upmarket residential-commercial complex called The Grove. The décor was a tribute to white and cream, as every orifice was either these shades, which made the place very vibrant and bright. The strong lighting inside accentuated the brightness, but also showcased the wares very well. Overall, a classy place.

Service

The bakery staff were friendly, and they made you feel very welcome inside.

Food

Jamon Serrano Sandwich, Caprese Sandwich

I tried 2 sandwiches and 2 desserts. Both the Caprese Sandwich and the Serrano Sandwich (see left) on paper sounded winners, but I felt the sweet Viennoise bread worked better with the sharper, tarter Serrano Sandwich. I would have preferred a savoury bread with the Caprese – and not enough pesto. The Serrano Sandwich worked better with the Viennoise, but all flavours were obliterated by the copious mustard dressing that was too pungent and strong. Despite being aesthetically pleasing, both sandwiches missed the mark on flavour and were overpriced. Totally different story with the Apple Crumble and Maritozzi (see above). The pate sucrée was perfectly cooked, the apple filling was tart yet soft, and the crumble was divine. The Maritozzi was even better – the brioche was delicious and so light and fluffy, complemented perfectly by the smooth vanilla cremeux centre that was bursting with natural flavour. The desserts were better value. Overall, whilst aesthetically pleasing, there were hits and misses. Will come back for the sweet offerings and try their bread next time. For now, this is a B rating.

Final grade: B

Final comment: I would come for the sweet stuff over the savoury meals.
