Oxford & Cambridge Club (London)

Updated: Feb 12

Casual hang out for the alumni of the two most prestigious universities in the world, I was invited to dinner at the opulent Oxford & Cambridge Club. Was it any good? Time to find out...

Oxford & Cambridge Club Interior

Ideal for:

  • Dinner with a wow factor

  • Impressing your mates

  • Those with an appetite

Note: The Club has strict rules with regards to no photography in the dining room. I was told off for taking the above! Sadly no pictures of the food.

Ambience & Décor

The dining room is a plush space as expected. Oil paintings of alumni and royalty flank the crimson and auburn coloured walls, with three striking chandeliers illuminating the hall. The beautiful crown moulding on the borders of the high ceiling are in keeping with the posh look. It was impressive how well maintained it all was.

Service

Table etiquette, service and general observation was flawless from the staff. They engaged when required, provide efficient service and gave good recommendations. The prim and proper and the service matched their clean-cut, professional look.

Food

My rabbit starter was cooked well and the considerable portion was a surprise. Sadly, the accompaniments were bland and forgettable. The monkfish mains was also well cooked, which is skill in itself. The Mediterranean sauce accompaniment packed plenty of heat and flavour. It gave the fish some character, but the harsh tones of the spice overawed the more delicate ethereal notes of the fish. The sauce was wonderful, but perhaps did not pair perfectly with the monkfish. Again, the side vegetables lacked seasoning.

The crème brûlée was a great finish to the meal, as the creamy, luscious interior was a perfect consistency and not overly sweet. The crack of breaking the caramelised top to reveal the contents is always extremely satisfying. It was a great way of washing away the mediocrity that preceded. The portions tonight for all courses was surprisingly ample.

The three courses and wine cost £60 per person. For that, I wanted better quality dishes despite being thrilled at the portions. Dessert was the star of the show. Despite an expensive meal, the setting is gorgeous and the service was exemplary. The Club gets a B+ rating.

Final grade: B+

Final comment: Stunning setting, superlative service and shaky sustenance.
