Many restaurants are vying for the title of London’s Best Burger Restaurant, and certain gastronomes argue that Patty & Bun are at the top of the pile. Was it any good? Time to find out...

Ambience & Décor

Patty and Bun Interior

Tucked away in the heart of Oxford Street, this single-storey restaurant is hard to miss with its distinct red façade and logo emblazoned on the parapet and frontage. It may be a small venue but it does shout loud to be seen. Upon entering, the crammed-in tables augment the lack of space. It gives the sensation a stray arm or a leg could be fatal. Cramped dining is a personal bugbear given my girth. The hard and unyielding furniture is to ensure quick turnaround, which is essential, given their 'No Booking' policy. The drab interior is spiced up with quirky, yet apt, wall hangings (left) to entertain diners. It was a lively vibe for lunch today.

Service

Patty & Bun’s philosophy of a quick turnaround means the staff have to be proficient. The quick ebb and flow of the queue outside the restaurant is a testament to the unbelievable operation at Patty & Bun. The service is a benchmark for restaurants of this ilk.

Food

The Donald Chump and Fries

The Donald Chump (left) was the photogenic special. Double aged beef patty, yellow mustard mayo, double American cheese, white onion & gherkin relish, ketchup and lettuce; I am salivating whilst typing. The orange-yellow tinge from the mustard mayo and American cheese explained the naming. All the ingredients were a great foil for the perfectly cooked beef patty, with no one flavour or texture proving too sharp. The brioche bun was light and buttery without fault. From the first bite to the messy last, this burger was incredible. The side of Chips with Rosemary Salt was a let down. Some were burnt and the rosemary salt was too overpowering. For the price, I wanted more fries too.

For £15, I was thoroughly satisfied, despite the fries fiasco. Patty & Bun has been at the forefront of the burger market in London, and it is easy to see why. Prime location, quirky setting, and phenomenal burgers. The cramped dining and the poorly constructed fries turned an A+ burger into an A- dining experience.

Final grade: A-

Final comment: Patty & Bun proved big things do come in small packages. Will return!
