Sagar West End (London)

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

This was take two for me. Sagar West End’s sister restaurant was a nightmare, and I was hoping this branch could redeem the brand. Was this any good? Time to find out...

Channa Batura

Ideal for:

  • Vegetarians looking to try some authentic Indian dishes

  • Sampling a variety of Indian street food treats

  • Group dinners

Ambience & Décor

The restaurant was narrow, had a dated décor and was incredibly cramped. The intrusive nature meant I could eat off the adjoining table, and I hated that. The Hindu deities on the back wall was the only thing of note. Ambience was non-existent so onto the service.

Service

Service was courteous and attentive, but I would expect that given the restaurant was not at capacity. Hospitality is something Indians do well, and it was evident. Nothing amazing but not disappointing.

Food

Aloo Papadi Chaat and Sev Puri

The starters of Aloo Papadi Chaat and Sev Puri (left) were selected. The flavour combinations were reminiscent of the originals in India, and that is high praise. Full of spice, varied texture tempered with yoghurt to give all the dishes balance. The Chaat and Puri can go soggy given all the viscous items they are paired with, but remained intact. Other restaurants can match and/or exceed this level of cooking.

Channa Batura

Channa Batura (right) is comfort food for me. The Channa (chickpeas curry) cooked in an array of Indian spices (black mustard seeds, cumin, turmeric and garam masala) was not mushy and spices were not burned. The Batura (fluffy bread) was delicious. The other decent main was the Uthappam (top right) served with Sambar (lentils) and coconut chutney. The lentils and coconut tempering the spice and giving balance. We chose fairly easy and staple dishes, so I wanted the Channa to be better. I have had better in other Indian restaurants. My dining companions agreed with the assessment.

Sagar's dishes were good without being spectacular. The Channa needed more despite the excellent Batura. Other restaurants do prepare these dishes at similar or cheaper prices but better quality. However this experience was better than my last time, so it gets a C- rating.
