The Savoy Hotel has been a British institution for many years, and it is widely regarded as one of the most glamorous hotels in the world. Can the Savoy Grill keep up the high standard set? Was it any good? Time to find out...

Ambience & Décor

Savoy Grill Interior

The revolving doors of The Savoy place you at the grand foyer with crystal chandeliers, marble craftsmanship, and plush furniture. The restaurant’s décor was more restrained, but still classic British design. Decorative chandeliers, cherry oak veneer panelling, and sleek antique mirrors. Well laid tables with ornate cutlery adds to the pomp. Low noise levels akin to fine dining.

Service

We were allocated two smartly-dressed waiters that provided impeccable recommendations, topped up our drinks without notice and always was on hand to assist. Special mention to Rajesh, who had a particularly warming demeanour and was a fantastic host.

Food

Baked Hereford snails, sweet garlic, red wine and brioche crumbs

Feeling adventurous, I tried snails for the first time. Baked Hereford snails, sweet garlic, red wine and brioche crumbs (left). Snails are a tad rubbery with a salty aftertaste, but the sweet garlic and red wine sauce with the brioche crumbs gave a much-needed richness and sweetness to the dish. The accompaniments gave balance of textures as well as flavours.

Roasted Herdwick Lamb Rump, slow cooked shoulder, with crushed Jersey Royals & Alexander’s, and black olive jus

For mains, the Roasted Herdwick Lamb Rump, slow cooked shoulder, with crushed Jersey Royals & Alexander’s, and black olive jus (right) was full of flavour, juicy and melted upon dissection. The black olive jus paired well with the meat and veg. Potatoes were crispy-skinned with a fluffy centre. The large portion was size the antithesis of fine dining, and well received.

Lamb Cutlet with Fries

The other stand out main I sampled was the Herdwick lamb cutlets (left). Different lamb preparation but it was again cooked to perfection with fluffy fries.

Despite bursting at the seams, an order of cinnamon doughnuts with passionfruit cream on the side, served with hot chocolate sauce was placed (see below).

cinnamon doughnuts with passionfruit cream

I love sugar and cinnamon coated doughnuts, and thankfully these were nice and fluffy. The passionfruit cream had a smooth texture with the right amount of zest and tanginess so as not to overpower the doughnuts. We were given complimentary macaroons at the end, which were also delicious – clearly made in-house. Great way to end a lovely meal.

Savoy Grill's classy interior, faultless service and great dishes made for one fantastic dinner. Quintessentially British with a contemporary twist. I think given some of my dining party had some questionable dish choices, Savoy Grill gets a solid A rating.
