Chicken katsu curry is one of my gastronomic kryptonites. Day or night, I will travel if the craving for katsu grips me. Tanakatsu is meant to be one of the best in London for this dish. Was it any good? Time to find out...
Ideal for:
Gathering with mates and dates
Satisfying the katsu cravings
Authentic Asian cuisine
Ambience & Décor
Akin to many authentic Asian restaurants, the décor was minimalistic. This cosy venue had easy-to-maintain wooden fixtures, decorative wooden structures acting as partitions, and monochromatic walls. All made the décor unspectacular. Given it was a weekday, the crowd was sparse, making conversation a breeze.
Service
Quick service is another Asian eatery stereotype, and Tanakatsu is no different. The waitress efficiently took and brought our food without any warmth or welcome.
Food
Given my intense craving for katsu, the only dish ordered was the Chicken Katsu Curry (left). The curry sauce was spicier than I expected, and tasted more Indian than Japanese, but perfect for my palate. The bread crumbed chicken was beautifully crisp on the outside, and succulent on the inside. The most pleasing aspect was the portion size, but I would have expected that for £12.50. The accompanying garnishes and soy-based sauces do not really add much to the dish and felt redundant. Nonetheless, this is a tiny blemish in an otherwise great dish.
Tanakatsu had rave reviews over its Katsu dishes and I could see why. The chicken katsu curry was delicious and the ample portion always puts a smile on punter’s faces. However, for £12.50, I would say other Japanese establishments offered better value for money for their Katsu offerings. Because of this, Tanakatsu gets an A Rating.
