The Hive (Cayman)

Updated: Feb 6

When The Hive opened, it was billed to be a new Sports Bar built to look like a wooden shack with netted, see through-walls for cross ventilation and feel-good, crowd-pleasing food. Was it any good? Time to find out...

Nachos and tater tots

Ideal for:

  • A classic after work or Friday night drink with colleagues or a mate.

  • A relaxed place to just hang out without spending a fortune.

  • When you are starving and need some hearty food ASAP.

Ambience & Décor

The décor was as described above – not much more to say. The high ceilings have these giant fans that do a fantastic job of cooling you down. If you happen to go when it’s an open mic night, then the good sound system coupled with the high ceilings meant you could hear at the back. Whilst there were some screens at the wooden bar for sports, they weren’t your typical sports and hence I never saw this as a “Sports bar”. The Hive does have a quirky neon-lit signage board out front with a mixture of humorous, controversial, and weird messages to greet patrons. This venue was always a hive of activity (pun intended), and as such the vibe in here was amazing for dinner and drinks.

Service

Given the throng of people here every night, service must be sharp, and in every instance, we have been blessed. Kudos to the staff at The Hive.

Food

Nachos and Tater Tots

My numerous trips have meant I have tried an assortment of comfort foods here. My highlights were the Jerk Chicken Nachos (see left) (this was a huge portion – fit for 2+), Grilled Cheese (5 cheese blend – Cheddar, Jack, Gruyere, Havarti, American with rocket, bacon, and a drizzle of honey) and Disco tots (see left) (Tater tots smothered in queso, bacon bits, scallions, chilli sauce and sour cream). The jerk chicken on the nachos was amazing, spice cut perfectly by the sour cream and cheese. The Grilled Cheese with bacon was inspired, and heavenly for cheese-lovers like me – but was not greasy as expected. The chilli in the Disco tots was chilli con carne-esque and was just so delicious but eventually it made the crispy fluffy potato tots soggy. Presentation-wise nothing to shout about but this is not that kind of place. These really are crowd pleasers in a breezy, vibrant atmosphere for an affordable price. I will keep coming back and I give The Hive a solid A rating.
