Indian street food has exploded in NYC in the last few years, and this is one the many offerings in the vibrant Time Out Market. I came here a few years ago, and loved the food, so was it still any good? Time to find out…
Ideal for:
When you are stuck for a place to eat, and you stumble upon a preference.
When it is pouring down with rain and you want to kill some time.
When you have walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and are famished.
Ambience & Décor
The Time Out Market was not a traditional Food Hall. The combination of the exposed brickwork and metallic pipework inside gave a cavernous, industrial, and quirky look, but all the food was served on chinaware and glassware, which made it feel premium. The Market had stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge, so it was a great location. I loved how busy and boisterous it was. All round, a very pleasant setting for lunch. There was no service to speak of because it was self-service, but the food was produced quickly.
Food
Given it was lunch, I just had the Chicken Khurchan (see left) from Chote Miya, a lovely stall selling authentic Bombay street food. I do not usually opt for Indian, but it looked tantalising. For $16, it is pricey, but the quality of the lunch was superb. The marinated, tender, and moist chicken was well spiced but not overtly spicy, served with pickled onions to give the tang, lemon aioli to cut the spice, and a coriander & mint chutney to give the dish a refreshing vibe. The khurchan was served on two buttery parathas. All of it worked well, and I was sated without being totally full, so had to have some of my dining companion’s Masala Fries. The last time I was here, the Time Out Market delivered excellence, and it is good to see the standards have not dipped. I still think it is a bit of a tourist trap with the prices, but I would still, just about, refrain from calling it expensive – for now. Chote Miya and the Time Out Market gets an easy, solid, A rating.

Final grade: A
Final comment: This is one of the best Markets in NYC – well worth the visit!
