Where The Pancakes Are (London)

Updated: Feb 11

Give me American-style buttermilk pancakes in any form and you have me. Where the Pancakes are fuses the traditional pancake with modern ingredients adored by millennials and scoffed by purists. Was it any good? Time to find out…

Ideal for:

  • A quiet weekend brunch spot off the beaten path

  • Pancake lovers bored of the traditional toppings

  • Hanging out with friends in a cosy spot

Ambience & Décor

Where the Pancakes Are? outside

Where the Pancakes Are façade was drab, dreary and derelict. The exposed brick, viaduct-style storage unit sitting under the railway tracks was the total antithesis of the cute, vibrant and contemporary interior. Looks were deceiving. The light birch wooden fixtures and fittings, beautiful floral arrangements and large windows made this the perfect brunch setting. Long queues meant the constant throng of people created an animated ambience. I loved the vibe.

Service

The constant flow of diners was a testament to the proficient service. The staff all had smiles and made good suggestions to those afflicted with decision paralysis.

Food

forest berries pancake

The forest berries (left) pancakes was two thick buttermilk pancakes, forest berry compote, house cream (akin to Chantilly cream), crushed violet meringues and almond flakes as garnish. What a delicious dish. I loved all the components but felt the almonds were superfluous. The pancakes were fluffy and airy yet filling. The was cream whipped perfectly and the compote was the perfect consistency without being overpoweringly sour. There was a lack of saltiness, so I ordered some bacon to compensate. My dining companions were not as happy, feeling their dishes lacked dimensions.

Where the Pancakes are was a case of never judge a book by its cover. The ordinary exterior houses an extraordinary interior. I loved the traditional pancakes with a modern twist concept. The good service plus delicious main meant this is a must try for pancake and brunch lovers. The long queues were the major downer and not all my fellow diners were enthused about their choices. Therefore I give Where the Pancakes are an A rating.
